..... I want to listen to it on my old iphone 3 that I use as a bedside ipod ( no sim card) how can I get my audio book purchase onto my old iphone 3?
Both devices are connected to my home wifi network. I use the same apple id on each .

You need to sync it on to the iphone 3 using itunes.
to get itunes 11 loking like itunes 10 click
View > Show Sidebar in the top menu

I've changed my backup from icloud to "this computer:
my sync settings are "sync only checked songs and videos"
I have ticked all the books under "this phone" ( iphone5)
But after sync'ing I'm still left with only 2 audio books on my Iphone 5 ( not the 5 books that the "itunes/on this phone/books would suggest" )
And when I go to itunes/this phone/iphone3 in itunes, I'm at this stage:
i.e the 2 books from my iphone 5 ( eckhart Tolle and Jerome k Jerome) havent sync'd from 5 to itunes - and thus cant get them onto the iphone 3
( and the only audio books on my iphone 5 - are Eckhart Tolle and Jerome k Jerome - the other 3 audiobooks in my itunes dont seem to want to sync to my iphone 5 either!)

dont worry I've dont it fromt his page.. I dragged the books to the "2phones button" and dropped them into the iphone3 from the drop down menu and now they have sync'd
