Q: After all the steps I still have a corrupt iphoto 11 Albumdata.xml file. What next?

I have tried all the steps here, except deleting the com.apple.iApps.plist because I don't have one! I deleted it ages ago trying to do this before and it seems it never created a new one. So, none of this steps work. I want to import my iphoto to Picasa.

 

I'm using a Macbook Pro 13 inch, 500 gig HDD 2011 version, with Mountain Lion and the latest iPhoto 11. iPhoto has been acting iffy for ages even after repairing permissions, rebuilding the library and every step I can find. So I want to switch to Picasa. Am I going to have to manually import and sort pics to Picasa?

    Not really sure what your problem actually is. You've linked here from a page about sharing with iLife apps, but, I'm afraid, people link here from all sorts of places that may - or may not be relevant to the issue at hand. Can you confirm? If it is that you can't see the iPhoto Library in Picasa, can you see it in other apps? iMovie? Pages? Mail?

     

    If you want help with iPhoto you'll need to explain "iffy"... and list all the steps that you have taken already.

     

    To migrate from iPhoto to another app the supported way is to export from iPhoto to the Finder. For help with Picasa I suggest you ask the makers of that app.

    Sorry, I read the article on how to fix the problem if other apps cannot see the iPhoto library, because none of the steps there helped me, and it posted my question here.

     

    My problem is that when I open Picasa and select to import my iphoto library it says that I have a corrupted AlbumData.xml file. It still does this even after all of Apples steps to fix it. I have:

    1. Checked and repaired permissions

    2. Rebuilt my iphoto library

    3. Deleted the com.apple.iApps.plist (but it has not returned)

    4. Made a new AlbumData.xml file

    5. Removed all special characters from album names in iPhoto

    Nothing has worked.

     

    All iLife applications can see my iphoto library fine. Another application, Lyn, can now see my iphoto library, but Picasa still keeps insisting it is corrupted. I believe it is true because iphoto is incredibly slow, freezes every few seconds and crashes if left open for longer than a few minutes (which is why I am switching to Picasa in the first place). It uses up over 60% of my CPU just to stay open and slows my computer down to a crawl, a sticky, lagging infuriating to use crawl.

     

    I would prefer to keep using iPhoto as its convenient for my iphone and ipad which I use daily, but its too much to cope with now.

    I'm afraid that id the iLIfe applications see the Library just fine then the problem is with Picasa and not iPhoto or the AlbumData.xml file.

     

    I woud be wary of this way of moving to Picasa. All that the xml shows to the receiving application is the current Preview of the app, not the original file. Further, as Picasa is using an unsupported hack to access the Library, odd things will happen.

     

    As for your issues with iPhoto, have you tried rebuilding the Library with iPhoto Library Manager?

    Then why is iphoto so unstable? It slows down my whole system. It crashes every time i open it.

    I'd bet a corrupted Library, which is why I asked...

     

    As for your issues with iPhoto, have you tried rebuilding the Library with iPhoto Library Manager?

    My point is that if you don't bother to tell us what you have done, don't be surprised if you get told to do things that you've already tried. Nowhere in any of your posts did you mention that you had rebuilt with Library Manager. And as for your original question: the AlbumData.xml file is workng correctly. Your issue is with Picasa.

    Forget Picasa! I started trying to use picasa because i was frustrated with iphoto constantly crashing. The core problem is that iPhoto is unstable. It's eating up my system and it's constantly crashing and freezing. I've tried everything to try and fix it but it still isn't working. I have tried everything I could find on the Apple support already and I've written a nice list in the post above of what I did.

     

    So I'm looking for any NEW suggestions.

    If rebuilding with iPhoto Library Manager  doesn’t work and you don't have a good back up, then your solution is to recover the masters from the damaged library, create a new one and start over from scratch,

    Just in case others run across this problem, some 7-8 months later, I'll post this ...

     

    This link did the trick for me ...

    I used BBEdit to  Zap Gramlins in file .... and picasa worked fine after that.  18,000 pics... had about 6-8 really weird file names ... fixed.

    Hacking the iPhoto database is really not a good idea - and making changes to file names within the iPhoto library will cause corruption and lose data

     

    This is realy old advice and is not a good idea
