Mail application freezing, how do I fix it?

Hello, I am having trouble with the Mail application on my Macbook.

If I try to open it, it freezes with the coloured spinning wheel for a long time. Then eventually there is an error box asking if I want to rebuild the index but I can't can't click on it because the spinning wheel won't stop.

I had no problems up until I was on a site on the internet and trying to log out of the site, it froze (with the spinning wheel).

Couldn't shut it down etc so I had to hold the power button down.

After this, I've had probs with it freezing generally and this problem with my Mail application.

I'm not sure how to fix it as I can't seem to rebuild the index in Mail.

I have a Macbook Pro, Snow Leopard 10.6. Help 😕
