I have lost ALL sound on my iphone5 suddenly. Can plug in headphone jack to hear sound through earbuds, but unplug it, and there's no sound for anything. No music, no ringtones, nothing.I did a reset, took an hour. Still nothing.

Suddenly yesterday all sound on my iPhone5 just stopped. No ringtones, no keypad, no music, NO sound at all. If I plug into headphone jack, I can hear sound through my earbuds, or if I plug in a speaker, I can hear sound. Unplug jack, and there is NO sound from my phone. I have tried every tip I have read. I have called Apple and did a complete reset after backing up to iCloud, which took an hour. Still no sound, and yes the switch is ON (no orange;) We do NOT have an Apple store ANYwhere near my town, so cant' go in, and can't be without my phone. I also have an iPad, and it is fine, if that makes a difference 🙂

When you push the volume buttons what do you see in the screen. Does it say "Headphone" or not?

Go to the Settings app. Tap on "Sounds", and at the top of that page, move the slider to the middle. Do you hear your ringtone?

Nope, does not say headphones, so it appears to know nothing is plugged in.

going to Sounds and sliding to middle... still no sound, cannot hear ringtones unless jack is plugged in.

When you play a video, can you hear sound? If not, you may want to contact AppleCare.

and I called Apple Support last night, who offered all the same tips that I have read about online, and her final option was to do the complete reset after backing up to iCloud. That took over an hour, so she hung up, but that did not work either. I asked her if this is a common issue, because I'm reading alot of similiar complaints, and she said NO, she had never heard of this problem. Seriously?

Ok, it's more than likely a hardware issue. AppleCare has instructions for a speaker and headphone reset, which should solve your issue. I'm sorry I couldn't help you any further.

Hello!

My brother has an iPhone 4s that did the same thing. He found that some tiny bit of something was jammed or had fallen into the headphone jack! It was tiny, but after he cleaned it out, it works again. It must have been pretty small, too. He covers his with tape from now on, when he's not using it. I hope this is the case with yours. Compressed air, or a wooden toothpick carefully should do the trick. BE GENTLE!

I tried the compressed air, Qtip, etc... still nothing. Called Apple again.... and we did a complete factory reset from iTunes, wiping everything out... still no sound, which proves that it is a hardward problem, under warranty, I have to have phone replaced 😟 No Apple repair centers within 300 miles of me! So... shipping phone off today. Bummer.
