iweb: I saved my iweb onto dropbox, how can I open it up?

Hello! I opened a dropbox account to store my iweb site folder. I am currently using Mountain Lion. But since I brought back my computer to apple, they replaced the battery, I then had error messages so i deleted everything and only added a few stuff back. I DO HAVE A TIME MACHINE BACKUP. But the folder for my site is stored on Dropbox, how can i open and edit my website through iweb?

Well you saved the wrong thing on dropbox then. It is NOT the site folder that you need and that is no good because it is the published version of your site and iWeb CANNOT open that published version of your site, because it has NO import facility and is unable to open html and css files, which your published site consists of.

It is the domain.sites file that you need - this stores iWeb data and iWeb can open this. It is found under your User/Library/Application Support/iWeb/domain.sites. Be sure that you look in your User Library and NOT your System Library, as iWeb is not there. Also, in Mountain Lion, the Library folder is not visible, so you need to make it visible before you can get to it.

If you cannot find your domain.sites file - which you should have, unless it has been wiped from your machine, then check your Time Machine backup to see whether you saved your domain.sites file and if you did, then you are in luck and all you need to do is double click on it and iWeb will open it.

If for some reason you did not back up your domain.sites file and did not back up all your user applications, then you are out of luck and you will have to re-build your site from scratch in iWeb.

Remember next time to backup and backup the correct file too - it is your domain.sites file that you need and NOT a site folder - iWeb cannot open anything in a site folder because it is already published and iWeb has no import facility, so cannot open html and css files.

First of all this is a timemachine backup, and I need to know where in that back up is my library!

I am currently running 10.8 (MT Lion) and I still cannot find the Folder as it is hidden.

Then when I open the backup, it shows 5 folders I can open...
Applications

Library
Opt
System
and USERS

Inside Apps: Nothing but all my applications i installed on my previous computer

Inside Library: Folders Including APPLICATION SUPPORT, but iWeb isn't in there...
Inside opt: X11 and nothing else

Inside System: Library... with the following Pictures

Inside users: _Name of User_ (Folder), no LIBRARY

The Mac help will help you where the hidden folder is. Even which buttons to press to see the menu item of the hidden folder.

Look carefully at the picture I provided.

When in the folder, go back in time to find the file you want.

Earlier posts contain the pathname of the iWeb folder and even the name of the file iWeb uses.

Another way of making the User Library folder accessible as it was with Snow Leopard and earlier systems is the following:

NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

No there isnt. If you want to continue with an iWeb website, then you will have to re-build your site from scratch in iWeb and then ensure that you backup your domain.sites file this time.

The only other thing that you can do is to purchase another web creation package that has import facilities which iWeb does not, which will allow you to import the html pages and files and css.

Packages that can do this are Dreamweaver and Flux 4 - however, be warned that the code may be all over the place when you do this and it could be so distorted that it is not worth it and it could be quicker just to re-build your site in iWeb using the drag and drop method.

Try the following:

1 - download and launch Find Any File.

2 - select your Time Machine drive as the drive to search.

3 - search for "Domain.sites"

FAF can search invisible folders so has can find your domain file in the invisible library in the TM backup if it's there. Be aware that, due to the nature of the TM backups, it will take a while to complete the search.

4 - if you find the domain file drag it from the serch results window to your Deaktop. Then put it in your Users/Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder. To make that folder visible follow my previous post.

If you have a domain file in Time Machine FAF will find it.
