New Macbook Pro 15" A1175 battery not working

Just recently purchased a brand new 'Apple 15 inch Macbook Pro Rechargeable Battery" from the Apple online store. My old battery was coming up with 'service', and as i've had it for a while I thought that battery has probably just had it (it would only hold charge for half an hour). This new battery is exactly the same model as my old one, an A1175, 10.8V, 60Wh. I took the old one out, put the new one in, put the charger in, the light was bright green, so i assume it is ready to go, turn on the power button and nothing happens. I pressed the little button on the back of the battery itself and it doesn't light up at all. I left it charging for hours and still nothing. It's like my macbook pro just does not recognise it at all! Put the old battery back in and it turns on no problems and charges up fine.
Any help on this would be much appreciated!
