It's normal. I have an iPod Video w/ software version 1.0 on it still. All I have is on or off.

I've never tested it, but it may be automatic. I know for a fact that when headphones are connected the clicking sound comes out of the headphones, but I've never taken off my headphones while they're connected and listened for the clicking sound to see if it doens't come from the iPod while they are connected.

So, short answer: it's normal for the Video iPod.
