Mail 5.3 will not send emails.

The problem

From my MacBook Pro Mail 5.3 will not send emails, using SMTP for my namesco account (for business). However i can receive emails for this account.

also my icould account works fine.

please note that for 2 years I have not had any problem until around December last year.

My attempts to fix the problem:-

I opened connection doctor and it had a red dot next to the smtp account with the following error

" Could not connect to this SMTP server. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information in the Account preferences. Also verify that the server supports SSL. if it does not, deselect the "use SSL" checkbox in the Advanced tab Account Preferences.

I tried the account on my Iphone (with all the same details), and this worked fine. I could send and receive with no problems."

in terminal entered ping smtp.hosts.co.uk, and was receiving responses.

I tried to use the IP address instead.

I tried with SSL on/off

I reset a new password with namesco. (tried again on the Iphone and no problem but Mac book pro will not send)

in disk utility I ran the permissions verification program & repair the disk permissions

in disk utility i ran verity disk and repair disk.

in terminal i tried telnet smtp.hosts.co.uk, and received this:-

telnet smtp.hosts.co.uk 587

Trying 85.233.160.19...

Connected to smtp.hosts.co.uk.

Escape character is '^]'.

220 smtp.hosts.co.uk ESMTP Exim 4.69 Sun, 13 Jan 2013 22:06:01 +0000

Connection closed by foreign host.

Hi dutch82,

I've got this exact same problem. I can send emails using smtp.hosts.co.uk, from my iPhone and iPhone but couldn't from OSX Lion so I decided to upgrade to Mountain Lion which still didn't fix the problem. I can telnet and everything but can't send. I've spent the last 2 weeks on this and can't figure this out.

It says that you've resolved the issue, can you please put me out of my misery and tell me how you fixed it, as I can't see you fix for some reason.

Thanks

Okay the fix is under network move wi-fi to the top of the list (I assume you are on wifi). At the bottom click on the gear and go to set service order, ensure wifi is at the top.

Now go to advance and go to the DNS tab, under DNS remove any servers you don't use and add in 8.8.4.4 an also add in 8.8.8.8,

Click okay.

Now close the mail app and restart the mac, on start up go to connection doctor and check to see if you now get connection.
