My Apple Remote is not registering to un/pair with my Mac.

I have replaced the battery and it is in the way the instruction booklet said. I am also follwoing exactly how the instuction booklet says to follow for pairing. I have used this remote with my laptop before. Then, one day it stopped working. How do I correct this issue?
