How do I reset my MacBook password in order to update my iTunes?

I received a message "Installer is trying to install new software. Type your password to allow this." but I can't remember my password. Is there any way that I can retreive or reset my password? Thank you.

You need to use the method corresponding to the OS X version you are running. The second option, for example, isn't going to work unless you have Lion or Mountain Lion installed. The method for Snow Leopard or earlier requires an installer DVD.

There is not erasing your files.

Select About This Mac from the Apple menu. It will display the installed OS X version.

I believe I have the Lion version and when I tried option two it gave me a few options. I can't remember them all but one was 'search the web for help' and another was 'restore' and things like that. I'm sorry, I can't remember the options exactly. What do I do after that?

And thank you so much for all of your help so far. It really means a lot!
