Why won't my iphone5 recognize my itunes match subscription?

There are two requirements for your iPhone to recognize iTunes Match:
1. Under Settings > iTunes & App Stores, you must be signed in with the same Apple ID and password that bought iTunes Match.
2. Also under Settings > iTunes & App Stores, iTunes Match must be "On".
I'm assuming you have not travelled across international boundaries -- if you did (bought iTunes Match in one country and are now in a different country), that might create some recognition issue as well.
