I am thinking of backing up my contacts to my computer as my iphone 4 is showing signs of 'a slow death'. Other than backing it up via itunes, is there any other way to copy the contacts into my computer?

You should have been syncing with your computer from day one, as the iphone is designed
The itunes backup is not intended to be a reliable backup for your contacts, only to keep history and favorites.
At this point you need to enter on uniques contact into your computer ( Outlook for example)> when you first sync you should get the option to merge the data.
All mine are backed up to computer through icloud. If you set up icloud whe you upgrade to new phone log into icloud and all contacts will load back in to new phone.
