How do I enable Time Machine to show on the desktop of my MacBook Pro when it is backing up? I cannot find it in system preferences. I am using Mountain Lion.

If you are referring to the reverse "clock" in the tool bar, it is a tick box option under
System Preferences -> Time Machine
If you mean the Menu bar item, follow RodneyW's solution. If you mean that the actual disk isn't showing up on the Desktop, change your Finder Preferences under General to show Hard Drives.

Finder > Preferences > General Tab > check External disks
I mean the actual back up drive is not being displayed when backing up with Time Machine. I have checked External disks in the General Tab under Finder Preferences but the external drive still does not show.
More Details about the Drive you are using for TM and how and when you first set it up would be useful information.
For Example: Is it a Dedicated TM drive....?
and did you follow the set up proceedure as described here...
