Java-what to do?

I know that Apple disconnected the Java plugin for security reasons and there are many postings here, on Pogo and throughout the internet on the situation. However, some of it is contradictory or intended for Windows users. The downloads that have been suggested I have tried but nothing seems to restore Java for me. I am upset at downloading "solutions" that don't work or may mess up my computer. Does Apple still have the Java plugin disabled? Will Apple automatically restore it when this is finished? Has Oracle actually fixed the problem? I don't seem to be able to download the patch recommended on some boards. I feel so frustrated because Apple doesn't address this on the site directly. Just call me befuddled. Can you help?

I have 10.6 and this version (64 bit, .dmg) will not work as it says it is for Lion only.

That's correct, Java 7 only works with OS X 10.7.3 and above.

Java 6 was disabled today and you will need to wait for an update from Apple, which is reportedly in testing now. Watch for an announcement or keep checking Software Update for the fixes (which will undoubtedly be the last as Java 6 will no longer receiving public support from Oracle after February https://blogs.oracle.com/henrik/entry/java_6_eol_h_h).
