In order to increase the distance between mike and speaker, is it OK to add an extension cord to the computer-to-speaker connection? And if so, is such a mini jack extension available ?

yes, here's a 25' Extension Cable
but the real solution is to use headphones; speakers and open mics don't work well for recording
Thanks, Hangtime...and quite agree, it this is for a demo where I need the class to hear everything.
Using a cardioid mike, so should be OK. I just wondered if the signal would suffer significantly.

it shouldn't be any problem for speaker level; mic level signal can be difficult over long runs (which is the reason balanced cables/systems are used for that), but the amplified signal should work fine
