Hi,

So in Messages Menu > Preferences > Accounts > Add Button lower left you have then chosen AIM and Added an Apple ID ending in @me.com (As it is a Valid AIM name).

The password must be 16 characters or less or you would have a different alert message.

Can you confirm that in Messages Menu > Preferences > Accounts > @me.com Account > Server Settings tab that the port is 443, the Server is api.oscar.aol.com and the SSL is On ?

The port 443 is used by both Mail and web browsers to access Secure sites and is generally already open in most routers.

There should also be no issue with the Mac Firewall if the App is Allowed.

Go to System Preference > Security and Privacy > Firewall tab

Is this sayig the firewall is On ?

If so Unlock and use the "Firewall Options" button.

Is "Allow Signed Software" ticked ?

Is Messages and IMAgent in the List of allowed apps ?

I Ralph Jones,

It seams like you got more expirience using the apple products, as i had been going through the messages i got some clues while reading on your page. hence i have a doubt to get from your knowledge.

1. The iChat, how do i get on with it? is the procedure same as MSN in windows? i tried several times to log in it keeps on saying to me that my account is incorect.

2. from what i read concerning the apple ID, that one ID suits to all other such as, me.com or apple.com but with me it keeps on asking me for a password because it is getting it wrong all the time also i tried to re do it and still the same, is there any magic to over come this.

your reply is highly considered

Regards

Hi,

iChat is a messaging app like Yahoo Messenger or MSN Messenger or in fact the AIM app for PCs or Macs in the broadest scope of how they work.

Depending which version of iChat you are using you can use a mixture of ID and Screen Names with iChat.

Pre iChat 3 you can only use AIM and AIM valid IDs (this is restricted to @mac.com IDs from Apple nowadays)

iChat 3 adds the ability to Add Jabber IDs which can include Google Talk and Facebook IDs

iChat 4 increases the number of accounts of each type (broadly AIM or broadly Jabber) your can log in to at the same time.

At iChat 6 there are several important changes.

The least of these is that you can use a Yahoo ID to log in to Text chat.

Apple also changes how AIM can "see" the Apple ID's Password.

The app HAS to log in to both me.com and AIM.com for the AIM servers to be allowed to "See" the password.

It does this for iCloud issued IDs (@me.com and @icloud.com)

This means that although @me.com and @icloud.com name ARE Valid with the AIM log in, early verisons of iChat don't have the dual log in to allow them to work.

The Yahoo Login will only accept Yahoo IDs and not MSN IDs like the Yahoo for Mac version will.

Summary.

You can use AIM or AIM Valid names or Jabber IDs and possibly Yahoo IDs in iChat 6

You cannot use MSN IDs Directly.

Depending which OS version you have will determine which iChat version you have.

This will effect which Apple IDs (that are valid with the AIM servers) can be used effectively.

Basically iCloud issued @mac.com and @icloud.com Names can only be used with iChat 6 or later (Messages in Mountain Lion)
