Keyboard and trackpad freeze and randomly become unresponsive

I've got a MacBook Pro (15-inch Early 2011) running Mac OS X 10.8.2.

Since a few weeks ago at random intervals my keyboard and trackpad become permanently unresponsive. I don't recall any particular cause or change that would have caused this to start happening.

What happens is that the trackpad and keyboard will stop functioning completely. The computer, display etc. would continue to function properly:

  • The clock keeps ticking.
  • If music were playing it would continue etc.
  • Internet connectivity (via an ethernet cable or WiFi) continues to work as well (a download will continue, and even resume if I disconnect and reconnect the ethernet cable).
  • Presssing the power button will bring up the shutdown dialog as usual (but I can't use it, obviously, so a forced shutdown needs to be performed instead by holding down the power button longer).

.. but the keyboard and trackpad are rendered inoperable, as if they were no longer connected.

I've made no progress in finding out what could possibly be the cause of this. A few observations:

  • It has never happened while not using the keyboard (e.g. watch a DVD with TV series for a few hours, and afterwards the keyboard would always be fine).
  • It always happens while actively typing (e.g. while in the middle of replying to an e-mail).
  • It is not a temporary problem, the keyboard and trackpad will not become responsive again after some time (the computer isn't particulary occupied with calculating something big, no beachball and no busy mechanical noises).
  • It does not happen progessively. It works fine and snappy one second, and I'm touching a dead keyboard a split second later.
  • I tried connecting a USB keyboard but that doesn't seem to work either (I'm mentioning this since some of the linked threads below close with that as a solution).

Possibly related (although I haven't found anything in these threads):

I've crawled through some log files in /var/log (via the shell and through Console.app) and found a couple things that may be relevant, although they seem unrelated. Etiher way, I was surprised by what I found. All sorts of errors with regards to Bluetooth and USB stuff. I'm not aware of using either. I haven't used bluetooth in years and though I sometimes charge an iPod by USB, I haven't had any problems with that, and this keyboard/trackpad freeze has also happened on sessions where I started the laptop and never even touch the USB ports in the time leading up to the freeze.

I've recorded the logs several times now and although a lot is variable (likely unrelated errors and crap). The following 5 lines consistently occur right before the freeze:

I'm having the exact same problem in my late-2008 MBP running 10.8.2 as well. 90% of the time, it happens while I'm writing something in Word, and my clock, music, etc. continues to run but it's as if someone suddenly unplugged the keyboard and trackpad.

I've attached my console log, hopefully that will help. It happened at 11:08:xx AM.

The only way I got my keyboard working again was by closing and opening the laptop, after which it took a while for it to come back from sleep but everything was working fine when it did.

Also, my bluetooth is off, so I don't think that's the culprit.

I'm having the same problem with my 2008 MBP. I think it has something to do with the OS as I never had this issue until I downloaded Mountain Lion 10.8.2. My trackpad and keyboard freeze up and then start to work again after a minute or so. Everything else on the computer runs normally(it's as if someone just unplugged my keyboard and trackpad)

When I first started having this issue it was very random...now it's happening numerous times every day.

Anyone have a suggestion on how to fix this? I've tried a few things but nothing seems to work!!

Thanks in advance!

I have this problem as well, though maybe a variation on same theme. Using MBP (2010) and problem crept in using Snow Leopard 10.6.8. Upgraded to 10.8.2 and problem persists.

Because it is random I think I've attributed about 10 different causes, but ultimately would like to figure out if it's hardware or software. Since I didn't do a clean install on 10.8.2, software still seems like a remote possibility.

Zapped PRAM, deleted all suspect LaunchAgents/Daemons, turned off Bluetooth, repaired permissions and so on from Disk Utility, checked RAM, etc.

Looking in console problem seems to be lock-up of all USB hubs and ports, usually with error 0xe00002ed while getting port status. It cycles thru each hub and port giving this error, so if you leave it running there will be a pretty large log file full of this. There doesn't seem to be a consistent trigger event earlier in console history. Nothing is plugged in to USB ports.

I don't see any USB errors with power as problem, which many people report when attaching various devices.

Problem occurred when I was booted from 10.6.x Install CD. Problem persists over multiple restarts and keyboard won't work during boot - though eventually it may boot successfully. Problem seems to be getting worse in terms of rebooting to the point where I have to disconnect the HD, boot from CD, and then plug HD back in and reboot.

It really seems like a marginal logic board type of problem and I'm thinking of putting it on eBay for parts and buying a new one. Have wasted way too much time on this.

Hi,

I'm having the same problem! It started in January and would happen infrequently. Now, most of the time they are inactive. Nothing in particular causes it either. Also, one of the USB ports stops working.

I have a MBPro Mid-2010 15". I'm running 10.8.2 and Mountain Lion.

I have taken it to Apple 5 times!! They couldn't work out what it was initially. Tried wipe and reinstall everything, software updates. They then decided that it was the motherboard! I decided to do some frantic research to see if there was something else I could do.

Last night, I updated the SMC firmware and that seemed to fix it. The keyboard and trackpad had been completely unresponsive all evening and as soon as it had installed they were working again. However, this afternoon it froze again and has only worked briefly since. It worked for about 20 minutes after I updated the software but then crashed. It is rather confusing and very annoying!

With the update of the firmware and software seeming to briefly fix the problem, I am not sure whether it can be hardware (I don't know lots about computers and so am not sure whether the firmware affecting it rules out hardware or not).

I'm booked back in with Apple on Monday and I'll see what they have to say. I'll let you know.

Has anyone had any luck with finding a solution so far?

I started having the same problem on my macbook pro 15" mid-2010 since upgrading from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion a month ago. I tried rolling back to Lion and Snow Leopard but the errors continued to occur. Yesterday I physically removed the bluetooth adapter and I replaced the RAM in my macbook pro. I did a clean install of Mountain Lion 10.8.3 and then updated to 10.8.4.

It's too early to say whether the issue is resolved for sure but since then my system has been stable. In the console, there have not been any clearpipestall errors and, in fact, no messages pertaining to the IOBluetoothUSBDFU, BroadcomBluetoothHCIControllerUSBTransport, IOBluetoothHCIController or AppleBluetoothHCIControllerUSBTransport.

My working theory is that the cause for me was either faulty RAM or a faulty bluetooth adapter. I will swap back to the original RAM this evening and see whether the issue returns. I should note that when I ran the apple hardware test with the old RAM there were no problems reported. Removing the bluetooth adapter was not a big sacrifice for me: the wifi had failed on the adapter about 12 months ago and I don't use many bluetooth devices.
