Tried turning off and on in settings, but still nothing. The microphone comes on when home button pressed and released, but she says nothing. Any ideas?

Do you have a valid, working Internet connection when you try to use Siri? And it's turned on in Settings/General/Siri?
Siri does not say anything until after you have posed a question.
