I have some video shot on an iPad that is right side up on the iPad, right side up in iPhoto/Quicktime viewer, but when imported into an iMovie project, it is upside down. I assume this is because the iPad was inverted while shooting. (?) Is it possible to invert this video?
Yes. Drag the cip into a Project and use the Rotate, Crop, Ken Burns Tool on the middle Toolbar.
if it's in iMovie, isn't it in a project already? Can't find the tools you're talking about. I'm very green at using iMovie.
I found the Ken Burns effect under "Photo" in IMovie. It doesn't seem to do anything to the clip I have in the viewrer (iMovie). Jeez I hate this stuff! it's why I have creative constipation!

I found the answer in an archived discussion. I have seen from searching for the answer that this is a very common problem and shame on Apple for being NO HELP at all!
In iMovie, go to the edit function button on left of screen. Then go to "Effects". Choose "Mirror" and select the clip you need to invert. Move "Vertical" slider to "Bottom", then move "Horizontal" slider all the way to the right. Preview and apply. Your video is now right side up.

Also I didn't realize that I have iMovie HD and it looks totally different than the iMovie shown on these tutorials. Or am I just doing something wrong? One reason why they didn't translate to me having any clue...
