That's just it. I started noticing last week that my lock started working inerminttently. I can't peg it down if it's a slow software problem (I closed every app) or if the button is physically busted. My home button works flawlessly, but the lock button is intermittent.
Most likely hardware problem, so to prove it, Restore the iPhone with current iTunes on computer. See if still a problem, if so, make Genius reservation or set up Service and take or send to Apple for resolution under Warranty. If you want to try Virtual Lock Button, tap Settings App > General > Accessibility > Assistive Touch > ON > tap new white screen button > Device > Lock. You can even turn OFF iPhone with this. To turn iPhone ON, connect to power, charger or USB of computer.

This method works flawlessly. I'm playing around with it and it doesn't fail to work. The button not so much.
I took it into the apple store today. The genius said that it's a little common and he switched out the phone under warranty.
mine is doing the same, the tech at the phone store reset the phone software suggesting it was a common software fault but its still happening, reading online it seems more common that i expected amongst iPhone 5 users, will take it back next week and ask for it to be swapped out
My iPhone 5's lock button works intermittently.
