Final Cut Pro X freezing on top spec new 27" iMac, help!

I finally received my new 27" iMac today and installed all the latest updates and then the latest versions of FCPX and compressor.

Spec of new iMac:

27" Late 2012

3.4Ghz Intel i7

8GB RAM (I also added 16GB of third party RAM to the machine to take it up to 24GB RAM but remove this later)

GeForce GTX 680MX 2048MB Graphics card

1.12TB Fusion Drive (1.09TB free)

OS X 10.8.2 Mountain Lion

Immediately I noticed performance issues and then it kept freezing whilst running FCPX - the whole OS would freeze resulting in me having to actually turn off the machine and turn it on again. It happened repeatedly so have done all the obvious things but still have the issue.

So far I've tried (with no luck):

- removing the third party RAM

- restarting the computer, multiple times

- making sure everything is up to date

- removing the FCPX preferences

- doing a PRAM and SMC reset

- fully uninstalling and reinstalling FCPX

- running the short and long Apple Hardware Tests (no problems found)

I am working with a large quantity of video files off an 8TB Thunderbolt drive but I've been using FCPX on my old 27" iMac and had no problems with that at all, the spec of that being far less powerful:

27" mid 2011

3.4Ghz Intel i7

8GB Ram

Radeon HD 6970M 1024MB

1TB hard drive

I'm thinking it could possibly be the graphics card or a software issue?

Any help or advice would be great!!!

Thanks!

I have the Imac w/GTX 680MX, i7 on order, and now I'm worried!

I bought it for using FCPX and Motion 5! Right now I have a 2011 Mac Mini and it just can not handle what I'm doing lately.

Question: Is it freezing ONLY with text? I use Motion 5 mainly for video effects, not so much for Text effects.

And FCPX for editing, with basic titles...no fancy titles at this point.

I'm just wondering what to exspect.

Thanks,

Who knows…you may be lucky.

It's clear that (nearly al) the folks who have contributed too this thread have experienced huge difficulties. But it's doubtful it's representative of all those (thousands?) who bought the top-of-the-line iMac and using FCPX.

Go to the Creative COW site and do a bunch of searches in the two very active FCPX forums. For example: FCPX + freeze, iMac + freeze, GTX 680MX + freeze, and so on. If there was a universal problem, I would expect it to be widely and loudly discussed there. I just haven't seen those reports.

BTW, having said that does not mean I'm not sympathetic to those who are dead in the water. If I were in their shoes I would be at least as frustrated.

OK... I just stopped by an Apple Store in Los Gatos, and tried to make everyone of their desktops, from 21" to MacPro, crash by using FCPX. Nothing would crash! They didn't have an iMac configured like mine as another Apple Store did that I tried previously, so it's kind of an apples to oranges comparison.

I loaded the timeline with their stock footage and titles faster than anyone would ever do in a real work environment...and nothing! Not even a stutter. Stand by for full specs of the machines that I tried. I didn't try any MacBook/Pros.

Mine would have crashed long before what I put these machines through. I snaped pics, but I'm not sure if that was cool or not so I won't post them.

1.

Mac Pro

Mid 2012

3.2 GHz Quad Core Intel Xenon

6 GB 1066 ATI Radeon HD 5770

OS X 10.8.2

FCPX 10.0.6

I imported 1 minute of 1080p footage into the timeline.

Added 6 Titles including Far, Far Away and Blur. Changed style to Dream on all. Transformed. Changed font.

The machine hummed! Not even a stutter. Took very little time to render even though I jammed multiple operations down it's throat! Perfect!

2.

iMac 27"

Late 2012

2.9 GHz i5

8GB 1600

NVIDIA Geforce GTX 660M 512

OSX 10.8.2

FCPX 10.0.7

I imported 45 seconds of 1080p footage into the timeline.

Added 5 Titles including Far, Far Away and Blur. Changed style to Dream on all. Transformed. Changed font.

The machine plugged right along! Not even a stutter. Slower than the Mac Pro on rendering, which is to be expected. Never crashed.

3.

iMac 21.5

2.9GHz quad-core Intel Core i5

8GB

NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 512MB

OSX 10.8.2

FCPX 10.0.7

I imported 1 minute of 1080p footage into the timeline.

Added 6 Titles including Far, Far Away and Blur. Changed style to Dream on all. Transformed. Changed font.
