Final Cut Pro X freezing on top spec new 27" iMac, help!

I finally received my new 27" iMac today and installed all the latest updates and then the latest versions of FCPX and compressor.

Spec of new iMac:

27" Late 2012

3.4Ghz Intel i7

8GB RAM (I also added 16GB of third party RAM to the machine to take it up to 24GB RAM but remove this later)

GeForce GTX 680MX 2048MB Graphics card

1.12TB Fusion Drive (1.09TB free)

OS X 10.8.2 Mountain Lion

Immediately I noticed performance issues and then it kept freezing whilst running FCPX - the whole OS would freeze resulting in me having to actually turn off the machine and turn it on again. It happened repeatedly so have done all the obvious things but still have the issue.

So far I've tried (with no luck):

- removing the third party RAM

- restarting the computer, multiple times

- making sure everything is up to date

- removing the FCPX preferences

- doing a PRAM and SMC reset

- fully uninstalling and reinstalling FCPX

- running the short and long Apple Hardware Tests (no problems found)

I am working with a large quantity of video files off an 8TB Thunderbolt drive but I've been using FCPX on my old 27" iMac and had no problems with that at all, the spec of that being far less powerful:

27" mid 2011

3.4Ghz Intel i7

8GB Ram

Radeon HD 6970M 1024MB

1TB hard drive

I'm thinking it could possibly be the graphics card or a software issue?

Any help or advice would be great!!!

Thanks!

Jon

Hi Tom,

User uploaded file

Media is:

User uploaded file

The media are from a Panasonic HS700 camera. I rewrap them to the m4v format.

I do this process for 2 years and the files work without any problem in iMovie on my new iMac.

I tried smaller files as well - same problem.

or older projects:

Media is on external firewire 800 harddrive connected over Thunderbold/FW800 adapter.

I did the same test on with media on internal Fusion drive > Same result :-(

FCPX on my older iMac 9,1 core duo has no problem.

Thank you for any advise to solve this.

best regards

Roland

Absolutely should not use m4v with compressed audio in FCP. I don't care what you did in iMovie. This is a completely different application. Any resemblance is superficial. Rewrap to QuickTime with uncompressed audio. The media should be optimized on import to ProRes. You should import from the camera or camera archive into FCP and not use other applications to ingest media.

I have been having issues with my 2011 iMac which have not been fixed after three repairs (GFX card, Logic board and now thunderbolt ports. Finally Apple has agreed to simply replace the machine and in the process, knowing that I am a Video Editor graciously allowed me to upgrade the replacement machine if I chose.

It is my primary work station and the tools of my trade are cheifly FCPX and Motion.

So after all the billable time lost to returning it, testing it, swapping out RAM and re-returning it etc... I decided to make the "smart business decision" and go for the most highly spec'd machine possible to give myself the best chance of minimizing any future bottlenecks or technical issues. 100% Apple, 100% highest specs. Heck, I even went so far as to begrudgingly purchase 32GB of overpriced "Apple" RAM simply to never have to hear the words "Well, you do have third party RAM so that could be the issue" ever, ever again.

Anyway, one of the specs I upgraded was - you guessed it - the 680MX GFX card.

It is due to arrive in about 10 days.

This is Applecare doing the right thing trying to satisfy a pro customer who has had some bad luck so far with their hardware. I wonder if they have any idea that their well intentioned gesture is about to result in them delivering a video professional a machine that is incompatible with FCPX 10.0.7?

I am glad I found this thread rather than finding out the first day I tried to work with it.

I can only hope the update arrives before the iMac.

You are the perfect example, so sorry for you of all the reasons I am so mad at Apple. This is exactly all the most annoying that a company can do to their loyal customers. I have repeatedly used this example to explain why we are being abused by a huge number of good intended and very sympathetic group of AppleCare personnel.

They themselves are not well informed by Apple who is covering up the mess in fear that it could affect their sky rocketing sales of this new wonderful machine.

This is why my last email to them was so very nasty. And again this is why I will forward your comment to them in hope someone wakes up and realizes how costly this is to Apple but also to pro clients like you and I.

I'm afraid you will get your machine before the fix. Don't use any of the titles that cause these issues to start with and look into using other NLE software to stay productive.

Good luck and welcome to the club.

Just purchase a better NLEs. Either Avid, the industry standard, or Premiere, second to Avid. That will fix all of your problems 🙂

That woulnd't have fixed any of my previous problems, only the current GFX card issue. The previous problems had nothing to do with FCPX.

The thing is - I love FCPX and Motion. I don't want to use Avid. It's strength are not relevent to the work i do. I do have a CS6 subscription so i can work on that but what about changes to projects that are current?

This situation is astonishing to me. Lets me just say it like it is to get my head around the absurdity of it:

The top of the line Apple iMac is currently incompatible with Apple's own Pro video and Motion Graphics applications.

Is that an inacurate statement? Please tell me I'm wrong.

If it's accurate and Apple is still selling these iMacs to video editors with no fix in sight and no warning of the situations then someone has got to call fowl. Or maybe even lawsuit.

@Cheesenightmare Finally someone that sees and feels the same way I do. Sometimes reading the comments I feel like everyone is so in adoration of Apple (don't get me wrong so am I) that they are blinded by the abuse we are being subjected to.

This happens in personal relationships too, it is a veryfiable human disfunctional behaviour. When you ask the person why they accept being treated that way by the other person in the relationship, they can only reply, "But I love him/her so I can't leave him/her.

Your description of what is happening is dead on, this has to stop. Apple is a great company but when it comes to hiding their mistakes thru denial and miss communications they have written the book on the subject.

YES THE TOP OF THE LINE iMAC IS CURRENTLY INCOMPATIBLE WITH APPLE'S OWN PRO VIDEO AND MOTION GRAPHICS APPLICATIONS

And you had to suffer thru so much (yes I know not related to this issue) only to find yourself trapped in this time continuom black hole of communications in which most of us have been since late December early January in my case. I too have the top specs, 768gb SSD HD, 32GB of Apple Ram....;-) no difference with non Apple RAM, NVIDIA 680MX, all the bells and whistles APple could throw at me I bought them.

But thank goodness I have Premier Pro to joyfully work until the wee hours of night on editing to my heart's delight with no stutter, no freeze, and no crash regardless of what I do, what titles I use and how much stuff I can throw at the super duper out of this world best machine I have owned to date.

Makes my 4300€ TOP Spec MacBook Pro look like a toy in comparison.

And that ladies and gentlemen is why I am still with Apple, cause I LOVE THEM!

Hi to all.

Same problems with my new iMac 27! GeForce 680Mx and 2Gb Ram.

Fcpx crashes after 5 minutes of work (i'm working to finalize a project of my last iMac). Is impossible to work. When FCPX try to renderer... the mouse cursor start to "think about it" and I can't control FCPX. It freeze, but I have control of my iMac.

Every time I need to close brutally FCPX....

Mar 24, 2013 2:16 AM in response to iTeppy

While I was searching a possible solution for this problems on web, I found another forum (not in English) where an user resolved this issue stopping to use his Bluetooth device. He was using a Bluetooth mouse but now with a normal USB mouse FCPX didn't freeze.

The post with this solution is of yesterday, so I asked to that user if this solution was really good. It means that there is some drivers conflict with FCPX...

I have keyboard and trackpad using Bluetooth, I can try to use a normal USB device.

Someone of you can try?

Hi Guys

I have been watching this thread since day one.. I have the i7 680mx, 24gb ram, 1tb fusion and 10.8.3 osx running latest FCPX

I have noticed (working on several projects) over the last week that i get the odd 2 or 3 sec freeze but nothing that cant stop me working with FCPX and MOTION

I agree its not quite right BUT its not stopping me working and turning projects around fast.

Am I the only one whose machine is getting better here?
