Final Cut Pro X freezing on top spec new 27" iMac, help!

I finally received my new 27" iMac today and installed all the latest updates and then the latest versions of FCPX and compressor.

Spec of new iMac:

27" Late 2012

3.4Ghz Intel i7

8GB RAM (I also added 16GB of third party RAM to the machine to take it up to 24GB RAM but remove this later)

GeForce GTX 680MX 2048MB Graphics card

1.12TB Fusion Drive (1.09TB free)

OS X 10.8.2 Mountain Lion

Immediately I noticed performance issues and then it kept freezing whilst running FCPX - the whole OS would freeze resulting in me having to actually turn off the machine and turn it on again. It happened repeatedly so have done all the obvious things but still have the issue.

So far I've tried (with no luck):

- removing the third party RAM

- restarting the computer, multiple times

- making sure everything is up to date

- removing the FCPX preferences

- doing a PRAM and SMC reset

- fully uninstalling and reinstalling FCPX

- running the short and long Apple Hardware Tests (no problems found)

I am working with a large quantity of video files off an 8TB Thunderbolt drive but I've been using FCPX on my old 27" iMac and had no problems with that at all, the spec of that being far less powerful:

27" mid 2011

3.4Ghz Intel i7

8GB Ram

Radeon HD 6970M 1024MB

1TB hard drive

I'm thinking it could possibly be the graphics card or a software issue?

Any help or advice would be great!!!

Thanks!

Jon

Well I have no choice then to report my own identical situation given that reading all the comments Apple has still not resolved the issue.

Recieved my NEW iMac 27" first week of January 2013 and had no issues whatsoever. I worked perfectly, until this morning I had to render a video from FCPX that I had not used since I received my NEW iMac 27".

Result, the machin freezes after a few minutes. Tried rebooting several times also, tried rebooting as different user. Tried rebooting and only starting FCPX to export the file...NOTHING works. Same problem as what all the user in this forum are having. Tried calling AppleCare but I am in Spain and these guys are closed till Monday here. I couldn't believe my ears hearing that from the automated response.

My machine:

OSX 10.8.2

27"

32gb 1600 Mhz DDR3

3.4 GHz Intel Core i7

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX 2048MB

Hard Drive 750GB SSD

Connected to WD Thunderbolt DUO discs, two of them 6GB each

Most expensive top of the line equiped NEW iMac they make, and I can't export an old project FCPX project. The machine freezes on every attempt.

I am now rendering it using my MacBook pro and it's working like a charme, as it always has.

APPLE THIS IS URGENT AND IMPORTANT YOU RESOLVE THIS. 4329€ spent not counting the cost of FCPX and I can't use my NEW iMac to export a darn file!!!!!!

I just filled out the feedback form, and for me too, this is urgent. I've invested a huge amount of $$ into this including classes, new computer, new external hard drive, etc, etc.

I hope the issue is resolved quickly!

I too have a brand new iMac 27" equipped to the max and have had no issues with it until I installed FCPX. Same issues as everyone else is having with the the iMac freezing and having to turn off the computer and restart it. Honestly, a lot of what I've read in the pages of responses in this forum are over my head. I'm not a computer genius but I'm no dummy either. I've been using Apple products for 5 years and after having invested a lot of money into this machine and software, it truly is a most aggrevating and frustrating thing - especially when my hope was to use FCPX and the iMac to start my amateur video editing business on the side.

Is there no one with simple advice as to who to speak with or what to do next? There are so many opinions and so much computer jargon being tossed back and forth on here that is seems to be too complex of an issue for anyone to distinctly give a real answer.

This just seems too big of a problem for Apple to ignore yet here we all are stuck with a product that does not deliver and no hope of an answer in sight.

My advice is to speak to Applecare and as I will do on Monday refer them back to this thread. It obviously is related to FCPX and it's inability to render files under the new specifications of very recent hardware changes made by Apple to this new machine. I was able to render the file as usual using my MacBook Pro and contrary to other users who believe they have an issue because of title rendering changes they made, my case is simple enough. I have not used FCPX on the new iMac since I started using Premier Pro CS6 and After Effects to work on my videos creations. But today I needed to export an old project that I had made using FCPX back in December and that's when I found the problem. An old project, no changes made to it, and last time I rendered the project was with FCPX and my MacBookPro. Now then I try to do it with the iMac, bang it freezes and the only way out is a cold reboot.

No need to try any fancy complicated hardware or software troubleshooting, as it would be a waste of time. Apple needs to make a fix and quick. Most likely FCPX will need aome update to make it compatible to our new hardware, whether it be the NVIDIA, card, or new processors used in this new version of the iMac or anything else they changed, Apple needs to make this work....and it's urgent.

I just received this mail from Apple Support (or is it FCPX support) after using feedback yesterday.

So I think Apple is indeed working on this issue at the moment.

Now I'll send them my crash log...

Hi,

This is Noah from Apple. We recently received your feedback regarding Final Cut Pro X. You mentioned Final Cut Pro X crashing with new 2012 iMac. If you're open to it, we'd really appreciate your assistance in diagnosing the issue.

Can you please send me your crash reports? Here's how: In order to obtain a Crash Log, you will need to open the Console application. Console is located in the Utilities folder which is inside your Applications folder.

When you open Console, you will see a list in the left-hand section of the Console window. Choose Files > ~/Library/Logs > Crash Reporter > Final Cut Pro. Click on the most recent crashes. Then, click on the File menu and choose "Save As...." Save that file to your desktop or somewhere handy in order to attach it to your reply email.

I just came into this thread because I also have a top spec'd 2012 imac, with the 2gb video card, which is constantly crashing whenver I try to export in final cut pro x - I bought this machine to be used mainly for video editing, so this is a real concern. I haven't been so frustrated with something in my entire life - I spent $2500 to avoid any issues with my editing software, not have new problems pop up because of the hardware! Argh.

DjangoDE - I got the same reply from Noah and after I pointed him to this thread he responded with:

"We are investigating, thanks for getting back to me.

Best,

Noah"

So it looks like the FCPX team are aware this is a serious issue and are trying to resolve it. Hopefully it will be corrected ASAP with a FCPX or Software update.

This thread has now had 1127 views and 69 replies which shows how many people are encountering this same issue and need it to be sorted!

Hi I have just purchased the same 3.4 High end I Mac and Final Cut Pro x.

16 Gig Ram

3 TB fusion drive and the GTX 680MX Graphics card. Doesnt arrive for 3 weeks, but will be annoyed and posting here if the prob is not sorted ASAP

What a hassle

I have many apple products and am certain they will sort it, but if this IMAC was your living, it would be more than a hassle

As mentionned in earlier post last weekend, I spoke with Applecare yesterday about this issue and they passed me over to the FCPX specialists. They are aware of the issue and working on resolving it. So I wouldn't bite my nails until they bleed, cause help is on its way. Furthermore this issue only happens when using FCPX, and heavy video editing can be done with other apps like Premiere Pro from Adobe...;-) And that's why I had not noticed the issue for almost a month after receiving my new iMac. I use Adobe After Effects CS6 and Adobe Premire Pro CS6 which both are configured to take full advantge of the new NVIDIA graphics card on this machine and the new processors also.

How ironic that Apple's own software is the one struggling to keep up with Apple's new hardware. I would be embarrassed in there place.
