Q: Final Cut Pro X freezing on top spec new 27" iMac, help!

I finally received my new 27" iMac today and installed all the latest updates and then the latest versions of FCPX and compressor.

Spec of new iMac:

27" Late 2012

3.4Ghz Intel i7

8GB RAM (I also added 16GB of third party RAM to the machine to take it up to 24GB RAM but remove this later)

GeForce GTX 680MX 2048MB Graphics card

1.12TB Fusion Drive (1.09TB free)

OS X 10.8.2 Mountain Lion

Immediately I noticed performance issues and then it kept freezing whilst running FCPX - the whole OS would freeze resulting in me having to actually turn off the machine and turn it on again. It happened repeatedly so have done all the obvious things but still have the issue.

So far I've tried (with no luck):

- removing the third party RAM

- restarting the computer, multiple times

- making sure everything is up to date

- removing the FCPX preferences

- doing a PRAM and SMC reset

- fully uninstalling and reinstalling FCPX

- running the short and long Apple Hardware Tests (no problems found)

I am working with a large quantity of video files off an 8TB Thunderbolt drive but I've been using FCPX on my old 27" iMac and had no problems with that at all, the spec of that being far less powerful:

27" mid 2011

3.4Ghz Intel i7

8GB Ram

Radeon HD 6970M 1024MB

1TB hard drive

I'm thinking it could possibly be the graphics card or a software issue?

Any help or advice would be great!!!

Thanks!

Jon

The only complaint that I have with the multiple AppleCare agents that tried to sort out my computer's issue is that when they determined that it was time to transfer me to the ProApp agent, they wanted to charge me $800!

I told them, "I wasn't going to pay even more than I already had for their f@#k up!" That conveyed my point concisely, and I was transfered immidiately.

You found the soft spot. When all else fails asking to speak to a supervisor usually also settles the argument.

that's normal for Full Professional Support ... Believe  me if you really working professional you pay for that support ... it's way cheaper than not being able to work for several days

I' m working mainly as 3D Artist and for many  software , which is often way more expansive than FcpX , you have to pay similar fees for support

but still it' s annoying that there's no customer support for hobbyists - especially since FpX is clearly also aiming for these customers as well

I don't believe anyone is challenging the pertinence of such fees for professionals or even hobbyists for that matter if they believe in this kind of support. But it's totaly out of line and inapropriate for Apple to suggest to a persone having the problems reported in this thread to go and buy support to get help. if you've been following this thread you'll agree that the issue here is not lack of knowledge on how an application works or doesn't it's about a Computer BRAND NEW that does not work with a spicific Application and that Application is also made by Apple. So to expect a customer of Apple or to even suggest that a customer having the problems reported in these discussions should pay even if it were one single $ is ludicrous and insulting to customers.

Which is why in the end the customer SufCity 1 was transfered to the right people to take his call and assist him. Even if that did not change a thing to date!!!!

i totally agree with you ... i was just saying that this kind of pricey support is nothing Apple inventend or is exclusive to Apple

i also said - maybe not clearly - that there has to be some kind of descent support for obvious software/hardware issues - this here mentioned 800$ support shoudl only be an addition

i find this here mentioned issue very serious and it's a shame for Apple how badly they support FcpX and that they have such bad information-politics

Agreed as the pertinent point is that even people who HAVE paid for such support would be left with the same problem. I only use FCPX at home "for fun" but we spend £10,000+ on software alone with Apple at work each year including FCP (not X...yet) and have >500 Macs, such poor response to issues like this certainly affects ones perception of a company when looking at investment in products in the future.

Your last comment is what freaks me out totaly. If a company like yours for example would have migrated to FCPX and bought new iMacs, like some of us, they would now be close to shutting down and losing all their clients due to their inability to work.

I just can't beleive how long this is taking to fix. And Agree TOTALLY with you on the fact that Apple is losing credibility with it's profesional based clients or hobbyist for that matter!

    Apple take note.

What worries me is this must be a major issue if it has not been fixed quickly.  Should apple be compensating us here

Hello have you had any luck resolving this at all? My iMac is experiencing the same issues and I don't know what to do. I find the issue happens when I'm adding TEXT titles.

Sit back and enjoy the ride....we're all still waiting for Apple to wake up and realize this is a disaster zone. NO FIX HAS YET BEEN POSTED or ANNOUNCED for that matter!

    That's the problem! Welcome.

As you use your machine more, you'll find that it crashes sometimes during export, adding transitions, importing generators into the timeline, and other random times. The way to guarantee it to crash is by adding certain tittles. During one crash, I had an external hard drive attached, and it made the drive completely unusable. I had to reformat, and luckily there wasn't any critical data on it.
