Canon XL1 digitizing issues

Most of my project was shot on a sony PD170 and it all digitizes perfect.
Now, I'm adding someone elses footage to my project shot on a Canon XL1.

My playback deck is a Sony GV-D900.

Without changing any of my settings, here are my problems....
FCP HD4.5 does not read the out point during capture and the deck keeps going until the end of the tape....the clip is captured and shows up in the browser anyway.

When I put the clip onto the timeline in V2, I get the red line and have to render.
Also, when I play the clip the whole pictue is square and I can see the right and left side of the other clip on the timeline below it in V1.

What's the problem and how can I correct it?
Thanks for any advice.

You've got a couple of issues:

1. The xl1 does whatever it feels like in terms of timecode. This is a notorious camera for out of spec timecode and firewire protocol and a whole host of other nonsense. Your best bet is to try capturing from the actual camera that shot the footage, if possible. Or dub the tapes to clean stock with good code. you'd need a deck that can generate it's own code while getting a firewire input.

The render bar is a separate issue. Perhaps the audio is set at 32k instead of 48. You can find out by scrolling over in the browser and checking the sample rate.
