My latest generation (4) iPad seems to take many, many hours to charge. The battery showed that it had 35% left so I connected it to an electrical outlet in my home. After five hours, it is only 85% charged. I have it turned off so that should make it charge quicker? Any and all help would be appreciated.

Typical iPad 4 charge time is 6-8 hours; longer if you are using it.
The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W or 12W (5W on Mini) USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (2.5W, most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.

It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. In rare instances when using the Camera Connection Kit, you may notice that iPad does not charge after using the Camera Connection Kit. Disconnecting and reconnecting the iPad from the charger will resolve this issue.

Turning it off should allow it to charge a little more quickly. My iPad 3 takes about 5-1/2 to 6 hours at most to recharge from about 5%. I never let the battery get lower than that before I recharge.
I plugged in tonight at about 12% at around 5:00. I am at 48% now after 2 hours. However, I am also using my iPad right now - while it is plugged in.
Thank you, I thought it would charge much faster with it being off and not being used. I guess, I am used to my latest generation iPod Touch (64GB which is the same size as the iPad) charging so much faster.

Thanks, Texas Man for all of your input. The connection that came with my iPad (latest version, 4, 64GB) is a USB cable to connect to my computer along with a power adaptor. The 'plug' that connects to the iPad is very small. But, when connected with this cable to the computer, the iPad does not charge. I have to use the power adaptor connected to the electric supply in my home which is also connected by the cable to my iPad. I had spoken with Apple and they said this iPad won't charge when connected to the computer. Not sure why, though.
I do know that the power adaptor that came with this iPad is much smaller (but interchangable) than the one that I have for charging the iPod Classic and latest generation iPod Touch. I wonder if the power adaptor has something to do with the length of time it takes to charge the iPad? I have the smaller power adaptor packed away to take on a trip that we are leaving for tomorrow and will use with the iPod Touch. That smaller adaptor worked well for the Touch but now I am thinking that it might be best used for the iPad so as to charge more quickly instead of using the older power adaptor.

The newest iPad that you have uses the lightning connector and it has the much smaller end that connects to the iPad itself. Your iPod Touch/Classic adapter will be even slower charging the device. The power adapter that comes with the iPad 4 is a 12W adapter and the iPod Touch is less than half at 5W, so keep using the iPad 4 power adapter.
The computer's USB port does not supply enough power to charge the iPad efficiently, so don't charge it that way or it will take forever.
Demo, I finally thought that it had to do with the power adaptor that came with the latest iPad that had the capability of charging the iPad so much faster than with the older power adaptor. The voltage is probably much higher with the new one. I had packed the smaller one to take on a trip that we leave on tomorrow so was using the older, larger one to charge the iPad which seemed to take forever.
I wonder if by taking the newer, smaller power adaptor with me on my international trip to use with my latest iPod Touch I am doing the right thing? I am not bringing the iPad as I always travel light! 😉
