Does lightning adapter work with older docks?

I'm having a hard time reading thru all the posts seeing that if I buy the adapter will it work on my older docks. I have 2 Panasonic stereos that worked great with my old iPod. But can't get one that works for this 5th generation one. Use it mainly for music, but video would be a plus if possible. Thanks for any help in advance.
