updating to 4.3

I have a 3rd generation iPod Touch. From my elderly Powerbook G4 (running Tiger) and iTunes I can only update it to 4.1. I found instructions on how to manually update it to 4.3 or I can go as high as 5 if I use a friends iMac. But if I do update my ipod will that prevent me from syncing with my old iTunes ever again?

Powerbook G4, Mac OS X (10.4.11), iMac G3 (10.4.11), iPod Touch 3rd Gen

So I guess I have to decide between 2 situations:

If I don't update my ipod then half of my apps are beginning not to be supported and the ipod is becoming useless.

If I do update, then I can update the apps on my ipod and keep using it a little longer, I just can't plan on backing it up at all to my laptop.

The first choice is sounding like the better idea at this point. I'm hoping to buy a new iMac this year anyway. Apparently Mountain Lion is OK with a 3rd gen ipod based on the fact that my friend's iMac seems to recognize the 3rd gen ipod just fine.
