upgrade to 10.8.2 left me with no music

My music, etc is stored on an external drive and has always worked fine. I activated a new Mac Mini with 10.8.2 and it now cannot "find" my music. I chose to "make a new library" and now have an empty media folder in "Music". The mini hard drive will not hold all the media I have on the external drive. I seem to have made a new .xml file (Gibberish seemingly) but have no library listing of my media. How do I et itunes to scan my external drive and create an actual library from which to operate?

Mac mini (Late 2012), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.1)

In the iTunes preferences have you tried the option under the Advanced tab to Change the location of your iTunes Media Folder location?

This might point you in the right direction

So on your external drive is all of your media in a folder called itunes or is it just music, movies etc. just in a bunch of folders that iTunes is not organizing?
