THE songs I have purchased did not go onto my ipod shuffle, where would they be, I have paid for them

Help. I have purchased itunes. I have paid for them and they show up in my account however even though I had my shuffle plugged into the computer whilst purchasing the songs, they are not there........... Also how do I delete songs I dont want on there.
