My iPod Touch 4G screen is messed up... Please help!!

So, my grandparents gave me iTunes money for my birthday. And tonight, I finally used them. While I let the songs download, I decided to go to my settings and see just how much memory I had left. I deleted a couple apps, then was going to check on the progress of my downloads. But it wouldn't (and still won't) let be go to my home screen, lock it, or even turn it off. I let it sit for a few minutes, I'm not even bothering with it now, But the screen refuses to shut off. It only dims. I have no clue on earth what to do, and the nearest apple store is an hour away from me. Please help?

Next try the remaining items of:

- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on

- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.

- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
