Q: what happens to your existing photos when you buy iPhoto 9.4.2?

What happens to all the photos in 8.1? do they migrate automatically?

Is there a potential to lose them?

iPhoto '08, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

When you purchase the newer iPhoto from the App Store, it will download and install itself into your computer. The frst time the new version runs, it will update the old iPhoto Library to the new format required by the latest version of iPhoto. All your photos will reappear in the new iPhoto.

This usually happens very smoothly. It can take a while if you have thousands or tens of thousands of photos (maybe an hour or more for tens of thousands).

As a precaution, I would make a backup (copy) of your original iPhoto Library before doing the upgrade.
