mail gets stuck retrieving new mails

Mail gets stuck after retrieving some of the mails, and it takes unpredictable time to finish the action. This behavior was not caused by the installation of the last version of OS X. And it does not occur in all cases, but in most.

Mac Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2), 10 GB
