Ipod touch frozen with Icloud back-up request - cannot turn off or get screen to do anything.

Touch screen does not respond. I have tried turning it off and slide off appears but I am not able to slide. I can see that I have recent kik messages under the icloud notice, but cannot read them. I have connected the device to my computer and it has recharged and also seemingly backed-up. Can anyone help with this problem?
