How do I import movies onto my iPad?

I understand that you need MP4 or quicktime format to play movies on the iPad

Let's say I convert one of my DVD's to either of these formats, how do I upload to the iPad?

Erm... is it just as simple as connecting the cable and my PC or Mac and just copying files accross??

Thanks

No, you can't simply copy them onto to the iPad, youwill need to add them to your itunes library and synch them. You will also need to be aware of the supported video formats supported: http://www.apple.com/ipad/specs/

copy them to itunes and then synching??

so if i hvae a file the size of 800mb, i upload to itunes and then have to wait to download on my ipad??

that *****

why put such a big obstacle in the way?

i assume it's a simple process of putting onto a memory card or just copying files accross for android tablets?

this one has to go one my list of 'not likes' list for my ipad 😟

>> nor do I care

no, i think u should care

if the rest of the world can do something in 2 minutes (copying 800mb file) and it takes you a few hours to convert a files, 60 minutes to upload and then 15 minutes to download, then i think you should care 🙂

ok, so if you're not interested in copying movies to watch on the ipad - yes, you don't need to care

>> ... malware that are endemic to an Android device

yes, absolutely. that's why we all love apple

but, a movie file is a movie file. you can't get anything bad from just playing a movie file

Install VLC from App Store (on your ipad). VLC is a famous movie player, but it is exceptionally cool on the ipad because it will play from Dropbox AND you can drag and drop movie files directly into VLC with its built in upload server.

To use The vlc app wifi server function. Turn it on from the menu inside the VLc app. It gives you an address on your wifi network (so this only works when your computer and ipad are on the same network). The address will look something like http://198.168.1.1

On your PC, Mac or Linux box, open a web browser at that address. You'll see the vlc upload screen. Drag your video file onto the screen. It will then do a wifi transfer to your ipad. This is a fast and free way to solve the problem.

I think ive read every post on this subject and I'm still stumped. I have a hard drive with movies on it. I connect it to ipad and go to itunes. I can only get iTunes Store. I follow that thread including abusive answers. I click on movies my only options are store or edit. There is no way I can add to library. There is no option in iTunes Store to add to library. Ok so I reboot ipad. No joy. So I reset Ipad. Now I find out more it seems you need a PC to do this - strange. So I connect to PC to see if I can sync. Thru itunes. Great as soon as I open itunes on PC all my photos from ipad immediately download to PC. No option to get it to go the other way. Probably spent 6 hrs on this and have totally given up. I know I'm a dummy I've tried everything possible. I've clicked explored every option in itunes there is nowhere else I can go.

It's really not that hard, but it's far from a intuitive process. There are surely a multitude of solutions, but in summary there are two methods (given that you have already have converted your files to an iPad playable format) is as follows:

The Manual method

  1. Open iTunes > Preferences > Advanced
  2. Uncheck "Copy files to iTunes…" (you could of course leave this on, but I prefer it this way)
  3. Connect iPad
  4. In Summary, check "Manually manage music and videos"
    • Click Use.
(You might have to click sync also to get it to work, can't really remember)
    • Now your iPad is ready for manual content syncing!
  5. Open "On this iPad"
  6. Drag files from the Finder here.
    • The file transfer will immediately start.
    • Check method below for problems with disappearing chapter markers.

Done.

The Library method

If you'd rather let iTunes handle your metadata and sync process, use this method:

  1. Open iTunes > Preferences > Advanced
  2. Uncheck "Copy files to iTunes…" (you could of course leave this on, but I prefer it this way)
  3. Open your iTunes Library > Films. I would recommend using shortcut [⌘+2].
  4. Drag your films from the Finder here.

PS: If your film contains chapters, you need to select the film, open the inspector [⌘+i] and change the media type to Film. It defaults to Home Movie, I think.

  5. Connect your iPad and click its icon from the top right menu.
  6. Syncronize.

Done.

I realize this has probably been "solved" at this point, but quite frankly the simplest way to do it is to avoid wires altogether. Load the movie into any one of the various cloud services from the device on which it resides. I find google drive to be the simplest solution, but any one that allows saving for offline use will suffice. Once it's in the cloud, download on any & all devices on which you'd like to have it available. In google drive you can check "make available for offline use" & it will be there regardless of internet connectivity. The solution is device & OS agnostic.
