    1. I'm 100% sure these are the disk's that came with the iMac (Mac OS Version 10.6.1 - Disk version 1)

    2. The disk is clean but there are some minor scratch marks.

So if it is these minor scratch marks is there any other way to externally boot?

Don't have a very good answer for this. Might try an external optical drive or if you have another Mac, "borrow" its optical drive by connecting the two Macs in Target Disk Mode.

If none of those is possible, bring it in to an Apple Store and see if they'll do it for you.

Good suggestions WZZZ (just realised your in NYC.. thought you was just up the road from me in London!!)

A friend of mine has an external DVD writer will that be alright to boot from?

If so is it a simple case of hold down 'C' on restart?

    cheers Richard

Well, if it reads DVDs, yes. C on restart. Used to live just down the road from you in London, if you are anywhere in the vicinity of Highgate or Kentish Town. But that was many years ago.

Managed to boot from an external drive.. and reset the ACLs as suggested in the link - restarted and everything is back to normal ...pheeeeeeeeeew!

btw: I originate from just up the road.. Highbury (Arsenal) small world.

Thanks for your time and assistance m8.
