I have created a group of contacts in my address book as indicated by Apple support but when I try to send a group email I receive the message that my gmail server cannot send the message as I have not indicated any recipients. What have I done wrong?

I've created a group of contacts in my address book, to save time with emails. However, no email will send to the group. Instead I receive the message that my gmail server cannot send because I have not specified any recipients. What have I done wrong?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.5)
