memory issues

I have a iPhone 4, have iTunes, iPod, and iCloud. All works great in sharing between devices. Problem is when I go to the App store through my phone, I see a notice that I have 11 updates that need to be installed. When I try it says I don't have enough memory. So, today I purchased more memory in iCloud. I still can't do the updates so I'm thinking that iCloud (during sync) put music library from iTunes on my Phone. The music takes up most of the memory on my phone. How do I get the music off my phone to open up more space and then do I access my music through the Cloud when I need it? I usually use my ipod
