Pages will not launch in template chooser.

Preferences is checked to launch template chooser, but launches documents files instead. I created another sign in name and it launches properly. How do I correct this problem in my account?

Thanks

Pages v4.3 on Mountain Lion 10.8.2. iCloud is on with Documents & Data enabled.

When I launch Pages, it presents with a file dialog offering available files based on the last setting for either On my Mac, or iCloud. If the former, it refers to the last folder location saved. If instead, I choose New document from the bottom panel of this dialog, Pages immediately opens into my blank custom template (configured in preferences). Otherwise, it would normally open to the Template Chooser.

If I choose Cancel from this preceding dialog, then I have access to the File menu:

  1. New - directly opens blank custom template
  2. New from Template Chooser... - as expected
  3. Open Recent - as expected

Pressing shift+command+N pops up a Template Chooser window as expected. Template Chooser also appears at the bottom of the Pages menubar window menu.

Sandy,

Your Guest Account, like the computers at uour Apple Retail Store, have no Pages documents stored in the "user" account. Based on your observations, I'd say that there is a default setting beyond our abilty to control, that if there are Pages documents available to be opened, we get the File Open Finder window, and if there are no available documents, we get the Template Chooser upon launch.

That is an excellent explantation! Thank you so much. The technician at AppleCare, after trying all sorts of ways to get Pages to open properly, said I need to talk to a Senior Advisor and he could go deeper into Pages software to fix the problem, which is what also what you said, Jerry...

Thanks for all your help. I just prefer things to be in correct working order, so I will probably call the Senior Advisor and let him solve this problem...

Thanks again for your help.

If your preference setting to open the Template chooser doesn't work it could be that the preference file in your account is corrupt. Delete the com.apple.iwork.pages.plist from yourname(home folder) > Library > Preferences. On Lion and Mountain Lion you find the Library by clicking in the Finder menu on Go while holding down the Option key. Do all this with Pages quitted.
