Q: Have purchased a new keyboard for my OSX 10.5.8 and the function keys do not work, have gone into keyboard on systems and unticked the box but still no response

I have purchased a new keyboard for my OSX 10.5.8 and the function keys do not work, have been into Systems Preference/Keyboard and unticked the only box there, what more can I do, as it still does not work?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.5.8)
