My apple tv has a box saying "new software to update the tv has been found. it is strongly recommended to update now"
I press the centre button on the remote to do update and nothing happens. I could still use the menu behind the info box but it want go away fore to do anything

I'm not entirely sure I understand your symptoms, but it sounds like you're having trouble updating your Apple TV software.
If your Apple TV is having trouble updating and it's running 5.1 software and you are connected to your LAN with an ethernet cable, an easy way to get the update working is to disconnect the ethernet cable and let the Apple tv connect to your wifi network. There is a bug which affects certain routers when using ethernet cable connection. After 5.1.1 is installed, you can reconnect the ethernet cable.
