If you wanted to take your Airport Express back to the store because it wouldn't connect with your non-Apple modem (as a wireless repeater) and you had lost the manual, what would you do?
The store won't give me a refund unless I have the manual.

Unfortunately you seem to be stuck with it. For the extending problem use Powerline adapters to link the two.
Print the manual out and put it together neatly.
Would that work?
Also it seems a bizarre rule to need the manual.
The whole point was to create an extended wireless network. Connecting the two parts with a wire is not possible. As for the bizarre rule, they called it "damaged packaging." Actually I have the manual but I wrote two words on the cover and this apparently makes it impossible for them to re-sell the AE.
Well you could use Powerline adapters which don't require wiring through the house.

Thanks for the link, I didn't understand what you were referring to. Wish I had known about those before I tried the AE, but I was told by the store 'consultant' that the AE would definitely work with the modem I had. Turned out he was wrong, and now they refuse to refund my money because of the loophole in their refund procedure. Won't be buying anything from them again I can tell you.
