macbook 6.1 does not start

White MacBook 6.1 doesnt start up. I get the Apple splash screen, and a spinning wheel for 4 hours.

A little history;

The laptop was purchased in late 2010, it was upgraded to 8gb ram and OS Lion. It was running great. Then I gave it to my daughter for school. She returned the laptop saying that it had did not start up anymore. i then tried reinstalling the original OSX SnowLeopard. This seemed to work however the laptop was still very slow. I tried to update to Mountain Lion and that's when It stopped booting up. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

See this Apple note on fixing startup issues. It's a little more detailed than the Mountain Lion version, which is here.

Hmmm, I didn't think about the 3rd party RAM being a possible culprit. I will remove it and reinstall the original sticks and try again. Thanks!!

I tried the fixes that were suggested however, none of them worked. I guess I will try bringing it in tho the Apple store.

Have you run the Apple Hardware Test? You'll use your original OS X DVD's, specifically the one that says 'AHT Version x.x' in small print on the label.
