That's not how the Apple TV works. If you want to download copies of the movies and keep them, download them on your computer.

iTunes is preventing me from downloading the movies to my PC.
I get the following message when trying to download the content to iTunes to later stream to my Apple TV.
"This content cannot be played in HD on this computer"
"If you buy the HD version, you will have to transfer it to and HD-compatible device in order to watch it. Or, you can buy the SD version and watch it on this computer."
OK, that's fine. The Apple TV is an "HD-compatible device". What then happens when you proceed to try and download the movie?
When I try to download the movie to my iTunes I get the following message.

I am not trying to play the content on my iTunes PC I am merely trying to download it.
And you're not given any option to just continue with the download? What version of iTunes are you running?
Running latest 11.0.1
I get 3 options
1 Cancel - Closes the dialog and cancels the download.
2 Buy SD for R109.99 and cancels the download.
3 Learn more - opens a link to http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3209 where I don't see a solution to my problem.
Hmm... does your computer at least meet the minimum system requirements for purchasing 720p movies? If not, that's apparently the problem, and I don't know of any way around it other than to upgrade your computer or use a different system to download those movies.
Yes this is the problem.
My PC is running a DVI connection to its monitor which does not support HDCP. HDCP is required to play back HD on the PC. That is why I purchased an Apple TV. But now that I can't even download the content to my PC I am a bit stuck.
