In Safari Ver 5.x running in Snow Leopard one of the most annoying things is the fact that the AdBlock extension while doing a good job simply doesn't block those annoying banner/ pop up ads in YouTube videos...

Happily it's now easy to fix with the following solution...

You will need or probably already have installed the AdBlock extensions for Safari if not you can find it here...

https://extensions.apple.com/

Now you will also need "GlimmerBlocker" which can be found here...

http://glimmerblocker.org/

(download the version fos OX 10.6 Version 1.4.16 for Safari 5 on Snow Leopard)

Simply download and install "Glimmer Blocker" which will set up a new "Preference Pane" for you...

Preferences.jpg

Click on the "Glimmer Blocker" preference pane and then select "Filters" from the tab bar...

Un-tick/ deselect all the boxes in the "Filters" section then click on the "+" sign below the "Filters" window to add a new filter...

Give the filter a name (I simply called it YouTube)...

Glimmer Blocker.jpg

(Make sure only the new filter you create is ticked - you don't need the rest if your using "AdBlock" as well)

Now in the  "Rules" window below click on the "+" sign below that to add a new rule...

Now simply set it up as shown in the following picture and click on "Save"...

Rule Type.jpg

(The most important bit to set is the "Host" section which must be set to "is in domain" and using "2mdn.net" in the text field)

Now you will find all those annoying pop up banner ads in YouTube videos are gone for good...

I suppose you could just use "Glimmer Blocker" as your only "Ad Blocker" but I prefer to use "AdBlock" as it's smaller and uses less resources but with "Glimmer Blocker" installed as well it finally means that you can get rid of YouTube video ads too when using Safari 5.x & Snow Leopard....

Tested on an iMac 27" i5 running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and Safari 5.1.7

    Hi

I don't have glimmerblocker, just safari adblock extension, and don't see the ads unless it's disabled - this with no other extensions operating... just checked at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Thhyeop5gW8 and ads popup within the flash video from about 10 secs in, but not with adblock on.

Depends on which version of AdBlock you have running.

Old versions of AdBlock used to have the ability to block the YouTube ads but quite some time ago and up till the latest version of AdBlock Ver 2.5.55, the ability to block YouTube ads has been removed (There are videos all over YouTube and on various forums with people complaining about it).

All I know (and lots of others know) is the latest versions of Adblock running on an intel iMac with Snow Leopard and Safari 5.x simply doesn't block YouTube ads (Even the options have changed where the old YouTube prefs used to be in AdBlock) and adding "Glimmer Blocker" with the simple "Rule" as I have shown does... so I'm just happy to be free of those ruddy annoying YouTube ads now...

Course it would be a lot simpler if the author of AdBlock put the ability back into AdBlock to get rid of those YouTube ads but for whatever reasons best known to himself he wont...

I'm using safari adblock extension 2.5.55, and tested as described with no other extensions or add-ons.

the in-flash ads on the youtube link I gave were stopped when adblock was enabled

Then you're one of the few lucky ones, cos it simply doesn't work for most folk using it with Snow Leopard and Safari 5.x...

Mind you you haven't said which version of Safari you're using or which version of OSX either...

There are plenty of videos on YouTube and comments on the internet from people for whom AdBlock simply doesn't block YouTube in video banner ads, as can be read from the comments posted on the following YouTube videos by users as just a few examples...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rwqKGaWDGUw

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFx7e82ER1k

Like I said in my original post this is for those like me whom are using Safari 5.x on Snow Leapoard and for whom the latest version of AdBlock doesn't block ads in YouTube videos...

It works and for me and others, that's all that matters...

5.1.7 & 10.6.8 - using just adblock custom & easylist block lists - I'll check those links later & see if I can get some ads to show up

I see the comments, sure - but lucklily, as you say - adblock alone removes them here, & back they come if it's disabled.

I just tried http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBy9iPzpsRk - you see ads there, with the same subscriptions etc  ?

if so must be what/how youtube serve up to different country servers, or maybe no ads if not signed in? (I'm not)

Anyhow, nice that you found a fix, and shared it here, I'm sure it will help

Could you make one that removes vidoe ads from animepalm.tv? I tried but couldn't seem to figure out how

  • oceansskyhigh Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

Thanks! I was also hoping it would stop ads similar to the ones in YouTube videos but in other sites aswell such as http://www.dbz.tv/3/ ? Any ideas?

    Hi

I just checked the link to the videos you gave but didn't see any ads in them !!!

You could try adding a block for the following in Glimmer Blocker and see if that helps...

As in picture 2 above (the one that shows the "Filters" tab highlighted", click on the very bottom left "+" sign to add a new rule to the YouTube blocker you should have already created...

This will open up the "Rules" window and enter the same settings as in picture 3 (Rule Type) but this time in the Host section instead of entering "2mdn.net" enter the following instead... "pagead2.googlesyndication.com" and click save...

This new "Rule" blocks many other in video ads on sites such as Vemo etc...

Hope this helps but as I said when I went to the video links you supplied I couldn't see any ads in the videos...

Hi, I don't know what to do anymore. Glimmer Blocker use to work in disabling YouTube ads, and I added this new "Rule" with no luck. I also tried the Developer Console trick with the code, but it didn't work either. Is there any other alternative to disabling YouTube ads?

  • MadFranko Level 1 Level 1 (5 points)

Unfortunately YouTubes forced integration with the  abysmal Google+ this month has rendered the about methods I've shown redundant now in Safari 5....

The above method still blocks in video ads on YouTube videos when you view them elsewhere (for example when someone has posted a video on another site) and it still blocks in video ads on Daily Motion, Vimeo etc...

It's going to take me some time to figure out how get Glimmer Blocker to once again block in video ads when viewed on YouTube again as they have really made a mess of how YouTube works with this ridiculous forced linking to annoying Google+ accounts...

Not sure if I'll mange it this time as the amount of rubbish they've introduced means wads of code to search through....

  • 1st.Gaucho Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

Thank you very much, either way. It at least does work on all the other websites I use.

  • MadFranko Level 1 Level 1 (5 points)

Here's a list of "Rules" you can use in GlimmerBlocker to block those annoying in video adverts on "Vevo" and "Daily Motion"...

Just follow the same steps as I described earlier and in the "Host" option enter the following to set up new ad blocking rules...

To Block In Video Ads On Daily Motion...

    1. Add a "Filter"and call it for example "Daily Motion Ad Blocker"...

    2. Add a "Rule" and enter "fwmrm.net" (without the quotes) into the "Host:" field. Then Click on Save in the "Rule" window...

    3. Add a "Rule" and enter "ad.auditude.com" (without the quotes) into the "Host:" field. Then Click on Save in the "Rule" window...

To Block In Video Ads On Vevo...

    1. Add a "Filter"and call it for example "Vevo Ad Blocker"...

    2. Add a "Rule" and enter "Video2AdRenderer.swf" (without the quotes) into the "Host:" field. Then Click on Save in the "Rule" window...

    3. Add a "Rule" and enter "9cf9.v.fwmrm.net" (without the quotes) into the "Host:" field. Then Click on Save in the "Rule" window...

The above filter should block all those annoying in video ads on both Vevo and Daily Motion
