I'm stuck. I have thousands of photos in iPhoto and can't figure out how to get them onto an external hard drive. I'm nervous about the process, because I don't want to lose them, but I need to clear space on my computer.

Your photos from iPhoto should be in a specific folder - It's pretty simple if you just locate that file, plug in your external HD just like you would with a memory stick or any other external drives, and drag your desired folder into the external HD.
Go into the external HD to be sure they are there, then delete the photos off your Macintosh HD and remove from Trash, freeing up some space on your drive!
