DVD Player shows menu bar and sound but no image (MacBook Air and Mountain Lion)

I have a MacBook Air "13 and an external DVD drive to play movies. When I put in a DVD, the Mac DVD player comes up and plays the sound, it also shows the menu bar to stop and skip parts of the movie, but no image appears actually showing the movie. It is not minimized either and can't be found. Please help!
