Text messages getting split and showing in reverse

I've read on other boards about this issue with various carriers but does anyone know a way to stop text messages being split into more than one text box and also why the split text bubbles then are in reverse order of how the text was typed? This has been very frustrating and seems to happen when texting to someone with a non-iPhone or an iPhone with a different carrier. I have AT&T but that doesn't seem to be the issue. Thanks for any input!
