Unable to connect to some Wi-Fi Hotspots

I have an iPad mini with 4G LTE and I don't always like to use the data if I don't have to and I have a lot of places I'll go and I get a message popping up telling me that the iPad was unable to connect to the WiFi. For instance I went to Culver's and when I try to connect to the WiFi "Culver's" my iPad pops up a message "Unable to connect to Culver's" and just has a dismiss button. Does not tell me any other information as to why it couldn't connect and even after resetting the iPad still get the same message. This isn't the first time that I have this happen and I can use my 4G however if I don't have to burn up my data from my plan that would be ideal. Does anyone know what could be causing this or what I can try to avoid this from happening?

Some things to try first:

1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.

2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.

3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html

4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

5. Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)

• Launch Settings app

• Tap on Wi-Fi

• Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list

• In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.

Thanks Texas Mac Man, sounds like the problem is with IPv6 and not really anything specific with the device itself. Sounds like what is happening is the Hot Spots I'm trying to sign into aren't updated and don't have IPv6 capabilities on their router and that is why I can't log in. I wasn't having any problems at my house, my router is updated as I always update it when I log in and it finds an update. I work for a cable company so I usually find out right away when firmware updates are available and then I get home and download it right away. However, I can't do anything for the companies that I'm trying to log into when they don't have their routers updated other then just let it go and use my data plan when I can't connect. Thanks for the links that explained all this.

Your problem has nothing to do with IPv6. The iPhone works perfectly well on IPv4. The article that talks about iPv6 was written by a crackpot and is completely bogus. I wish Tom (Texas Mac Man) would stop posting all these obsolete and inaccurate links.

It's hard to say what might be causing your problems but, coincidentally, I was at a Culver's today and used their WiFi with no problem whatsoever on my iPhone 5. Culver's WiFi system cause a agree-to type page to be displayed and you click Connect and you are in business.

Well, whatever the reason, I've noticed that there are some hotspots that do not work. I don't even get to the point of being able to get to the screen to log in. When I go to connect, I almost instantly get the "Unable to Connect" popup. It's very annoying, does not list any reason as to why it can't connect, and won't let me do anything beyond that. I have no problem with a lot of hotspots, but there are the occasional spots that do not work and there is nothing I can do and then I'm forced to use my wireless data to get it online at that point if I want to use it online. Not a huge deal, but not wanting to use up all my data at a spot where I should be able to use the free Wi-Fi and have no other problems getting my phones, or if I bring my laptop getting that online. I don't have an iPhone however though, it's an Android and when it connects as well as the computers, I do get the screen where I accept their "rules" and then move on, but the iPad will not even get to that point.
