How do I embed downloadable mp3 in iWeb?

Hello,

I want to enbed some downloable mp3's on my web-page created in iWeb. As I see it I can only drag the files on to the page but then they are transformed in Quicktime Player links to be listened to while on the page, NOT downloadable.

I have been reading here and there on the Internet to find a solution and also downloaded Cyberduck and trasfered a file to the server hosting my site but then I did not know what to do next. iWeb changes the setting if I try to make a hyperlink to the ftp-adress on the server, and sends me to the apple.live-page. Grrr...

Help? 😕

Thanks in advance!

You need to host the files on a web server, and know what the link to them is (not the FTP address, that's for you to upload to). If you zip them first you can link to them and they will download when the link is clicked.

Oh waouw, nice to find someone to help a woman in distress! 🙂

I am really new to this webdesign thing so I need a little more help. How do I zip them? And where do I put them on the webserver? In some folder or just in the first one that I come into when I sign in with Cyberduck? (where I can see a folder containing my website and in that one subfolders containing all the pages). And how do I find out what the link is?

See this page for info about audio file upload...

You can create a folder - audio - and upload it to the root folder on your server which is the one with the folder containing your website files and the external index.html file.

See this page for more info about creating downloads and how to create a PC compatible ZIP...

The URL to download a zip file in the "audio" folder would be...

http://www.domain-name.com/audio/file-name.zip

Make sure your audio file names don't have any spaces or special characters in them!

You should be aware that if you simply put a link to an mp3 file without zipping it or forcing a download through server-side programming it will go to a new blank page in the browser and play in a simple player in the middle of it, leaving your web page and to my mind looking ugly.

It's up to you whether you want to make the files available to play or to download; but if you provide a simple link very few people will right-click to download unless you put a notice there telling them to - even then they may not.

There are ways of forcing a download without having to zip the file, but as it involves an extra process (and may depend on whether your server allows it) I should stick to zipping them.

The method for forcing a file to download (without the user having to make any choices) depends on your adding a special text file to the folder on the server (this doesn't involve iWeb) and it depends on whether your ISP will allow it - some do, some don't.

The exact method is described here:

You will need an FTP program and need to follow the instructions exactly. You may feel that zipping them is simpler.

(My own approach has sometimes been to provide two links, one to a pop-up player, and one to download, as in this (non-iWeb) page:
